Northern climate with excellent summer sunshine - some of the best solar potential in Canada

Outstanding – 1,064 kWh per 1 kW of solar panels installed on average. Solar installations in the Northwest Territories are overall highly efficient, overperforming to an average of 1,064 kWh of electricity per year for every 1 kW installed. This is some of the best solar energy potential in Canada. Southern cities in the Northwest Territories such as Yellowknife and Fort Smith can surpass 1,100 kWh for every 1 kW installed. Your solar system will connect to the grid via the Net-Metering program for systems up to 15kW. Energy credits are provided at the retail electricity rate to balance day/night and seasonal usage. Important: Credits don’t carry over to the next year – they expire annually on March 31st, so proper system sizing is essential.

Protect Yourself from Rising Electricity Costs

The more you pay for electricity – the more you benefit by going solar.

Choosing solar energy allows you to save money by avoiding these high electricity rates.

The Northwest Territories Energy Board raised all rates by 20% for the year 2024.

With energy prices expected to rise even more, going solar protects you from increasing costs by generating your own power.

Net Metering Program

How Net Metering Works in Northwest Territories

Your solar system will connect to the grid via the Net-Metering program. Excess energy you produce is saved in credits by your power company at the retail electricity rate, balancing out your usage across day and night, as well as summer and winter months.

In Northwest Territories, with Time-of-Use billing, On-Peak hours coincide with peak solar generation times, earning you credits at higher On-Peak rates.

Net Metering in Northwest Territories makes it simple for a home solar installation to cover your bills year-round.

Solar FAQs for Northwest Territories Residents

Get answers to common questions about solar energy in Northwest Territories.

The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) Renewable Energy Program offers $4.00/watt for solar, with residential rebates up to $20,000 and business/non-profit rebates up to $50,000. However, applications are currently closed until April 1, 2026.

Solar rebates are only available for off-grid buildings or communities that don’t use hydroelectricity. If you’re in a hydro community, you can still install solar using Northland Utilities or NWT Power Corporation net metering (up to 15 kW), but without AEA funding assistance.

Both Northland Utilities and NWT Power Corporation offer net metering for systems up to 15 kW. This allows residents in hydro communities to benefit from solar even without rebate eligibility.

Due to remote location and logistics, solar installation costs are higher in NWT than southern provinces. However, with rebates covering $4/watt (up to $20,000 residential), the effective cost is significantly reduced for eligible properties.
